Unwanted 72 is an emergency contraceptive pill that contains 1.5 mg of levonorgestrel, a synthetic hormone (progestin). It is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure (e.g., condom breaking). Here are the key uses and important information about Unwanted 72:

1. Emergency Contraception (Pregnancy Prevention)
  • Primary Use: Unwanted 72 is designed to be taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sexual intercourse to reduce the risk of pregnancy.
  • It is not an abortion pill and will not be effective if you are already pregnant.
  • The sooner it is taken after unprotected sex, the more effective it is. Its efficacy decreases as time passes:
    • Most effective within 24 hours.
    • Less effective between 24 to 72 hours.
  • It works by:
    • Preventing or delaying ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovaries).
    • Altering the uterine lining to make it less suitable for implantation if fertilization occurs.
2. Contraceptive Failure (Backup Option)
  • Used After Contraceptive Failure: If a condom breaks, a diaphragm slips out of place, or if a regular contraceptive method fails, Unwanted 72 can be used as a backup to prevent pregnancy.
3. Not Intended for Regular Use
  • Not a regular birth control method: Unwanted 72 is for emergency use only and should not be used as a regular form of contraception. It is less effective than other regular contraceptive methods, such as birth control pills, IUDs, or implants.
  • Frequent use of emergency contraception can lead to irregular menstrual cycles and other side effects.
4. Effectiveness
  • The effectiveness of Unwanted 72 depends on how quickly it is taken after unprotected sex. It is around 95% effective if taken within 24 hours, but the effectiveness drops after 72 hours.
  • It does not work if a woman is already pregnant.
Important Notes:
  • Side Effects: Some common side effects of Unwanted 72 include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, headache, dizziness, and changes in the menstrual cycle (e.g., spotting or delayed periods).
  • If vomiting occurs within 2 hours of taking the tablet, it may not be effective, and another dose may be needed.
  • Not Abortive: Unwanted 72 does not cause abortion and will not affect an existing pregnancy.
  • Menstrual Cycle: You may experience a change in your next period, which may be earlier or later than expected.

It is always a good idea to consult a healthcare provider for advice about emergency contraception, especially if you have any medical conditions or are on other medications.

It comes as a single dose and can be taken with or without food. Morning Pill 1.5mg Tablet is usually effective if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.

The most common side effects of this medicine include headache, nausea, lower abdominal pain, and fatigue. The patient may also experience dizziness, diarrhea, vomiting, breast tenderness, and irregular period for the next cycle. If these bother you or appear serious, let your doctor know. There may be ways of reducing or preventing them.

Before taking this medicine, check if you are not pregnant already or it is being more than 5 days you miss your period or its already 72 hours of unprotected sex. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding. It is generally advisable to perform a pregnancy test after 5 days of medicine usage, to make sure medicine works properly.
